What is Therapeutic Dry Needling?
Therapeutic Dry Needling (TDN) is defined as “a technique used to treat dysfunction of skeletal muscle and connective tissue, minimize pain, and improve or regulate structural or functional damage” as per the American Physical Therapy Association.
It is also known as intramuscular stimulation, trigger point dry needling, or functional dry needling. On the other hand, acupuncture is different in both the technique and philosophy.
What does TDN do and who is it for?
Dry needling aims to release myofascial trigger points found in muscles that may be causing pain (see picture below). Individuals experiencing conditions such as myofascial pain syndrome, tension headaches, or sports-related injuries often find relief through TDN.
Who is TDN not for?
While dry needling is generally safe, it’s crucial to be aware of contraindications. Individuals with a fear of needles, certain skin conditions, or those taking blood thinners or with blood clotting disorders, those who are pregnant, in addition to a few others. There are some minor side effects, like muscle soreness and bruising, but they don’t always occur.
What’s the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
Acupuncture is “a form of alternative medicine and a component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in which thin needles are inserted into the body”.
The goal of acupuncture is to use chi or qi (chee), which is a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force, to move over pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into particular points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners attempt to re-balance your energy (see picture below).
